Pictures of Lice and Nits
Head Lice

Here are pictures of head lice. As you can see they appear tan or brownish in color and are 2-3mm in length. Premature lice, also called nymphs, can be much smaller. In this picture of lice there is an adult male louse (right) and an adult female louse(left).  Lice are very small and are often times appear the same color as hair.
Lice Eggs "Nits"

Here are pictures of nits and nit castings.  Nits are viable lice eggs and are found attached to the hair and bound with a glue-like substance.  Nits are about 1mm in length and appear brown in color.  Nit casting are empty and hatched nits shells which appear white or clear in color. As you can see from this picture of nits and nit castings ,once the bug hatches from the nit the nit casting will remain on the hair until removed.
Nymphs (premature lice)

This picture of nymphs illustrates the size difference between nymphs and adult head lice.  Nymphs are very small once they hatch from the egg and grow to full size breeding adults in about 7 days.  This picture of nymphs also shows how translucent a nymph can be early in it's life cycle.

Adult Louse (actual size)

An adult louse is 2-3 mm in length and appear brown or tan in color.  Image near actual size.
