Symptoms of Head Lice

What are the symptoms of head lice?

There are two head lice symptoms. The most common symptom of head lice is itching on the scalp or back of the neck. The itching, caused by lice bites, can last for several days.  Some people are more allergic to lice bites than others so the amount of irritation can vary from one person to another.  It is possible to be in the early stages of a lice infestation and not feel any itching or discomfort. If a house hold member is discovered to have head lice it is important to check everyone else in the residence. Someone could have lice without showing any symptoms.

The other symptom of head lice is feeling movement in the hair.  Head lice will move around the scalp to feed and lay eggs.  The adult head lice are large enough to sometimes be felt by the host.  Many have described it as a "crawly" or "tingling"  feeling in the hair. Have somone check your hair if you experience this symptom.

There are no other symptoms of head lice.  Head lice are not known to carry or transmit disease.

If you are experiencing unusual itching or movement in your hair- have yourself checked.  If you have been recently exposed, check yourself periodicly for two weeks. An early stage of infestation can be very difficult to see.  If you find head lice you should begin treatment.
